Saturday, May 2, 2009 - SF Metropolis Historical Society Interactive Workshop

To the San Francisco Bay Area Greek Community:

Preserving precious family photographs, films, and memorabilia for our relatives is often difficult and time consuming. Researching our family histories in America and Greece can be a frustrating yet rewarding experience.

We are thrilled to present an approach to these topics that will inspire, be fun, and very interactive.

The event will be held Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Annunciation Cathedral in San Francisco (see map) from 11am - 6pm. Light refreshments will be served throughout the day. A donation of $5 or more is suggested to defray costs.

The event will start off with presentations from two brilliant Greek American authors, Jason Mavrovitis and Irene Kacandes. Mr. Mavrovitis and Mrs. Kacandes recently published books relating to their own family histories (See speaker bios).

There will be a session on photography and another on video. You will receive a lot of useful tips on taking photographs and filming relatives for documenting your own family history. Members of our audience will be photographed and filmed during the presentations.

There will be a session on creating family albums. Family albums can be digital and displayed on the internet, and are quite useful for sharing photographs with friends and relatives. Karyn Kambur, a professional archivist, will go over useful tips and techniques for the creation and sharing of family albums.

Lastly, we will cover the topic of genealogy research in America and Greece. A member of the Greek Consulate will be speaking on genealogy research in Greece.

There will be a display of historical photographs from the collections of the historical societies of Oakland and San Francisco. You are also welcome to visit the cathedral's parish museum.

In addition to our speakers, there will be other authors in attendance such as Carol Jenson, who wrote a wonderful book on the history of Byron Hot Springs and another on the Mission of St. Paul. Books will be available for sale and the authors in attendance will be signing copies of their books for you.

Petrakos Films will be videotaping this event. You will be a part of history! A DVD will be made of the event, archived, and be available for purchase through Petrakos Films.

Come and enjoy this very special day with us! Please RSVP and let us know if you are planning to attend. If you have any questions please contact Jim Lucas, email: jim@loukas.com, or Mary Mousalimas, email: mkmahc26@aol.com.
