Byzantine Chant Ministry at Annunciation Cathedral

We are excited to share the launch of the Byzantine Chant Ministry to support the prayer of the Church through sacred music. In Orthodox worship, chant and the cycle of services are inseparable; hymnography is not an addition to prayer, but one of the Church’s primary ways of proclaiming theology and forming the soul.

Through Byzantine chant, the texts of the Church are expressed musically, creating auditory icons that draw the faithful into deeper prayer, repentance, and attentiveness before the presence of God. This ministry seeks to preserve and cultivate the living musical tradition of the Church while forming chanters who understand chant as a ministry of prayer.

Instruction will be led by Christopher Hondros. Byzantine notation will be used, and no prior experience is required. Chant instruction is expected to meet on Saturdays at 3:00 p.m.; schedules may vary.
