One of the many ways our Cathedral invests in the future of our community is by supporting the academic and vocational aspirations of our young people through various scholarship opportunities that assist students pursuing higher education. Some scholarships are awarded annually, while others are offered as fund income permits. We are pleased to announce that applications for the 2026 Scholarship Program are now being accepted for the following scholarships:
- ELPIDA Scholarship – $2,500
- Andrew & Efrosine Vellis Memorial Scholarship – $1,500 *
- Cathedral Ladies of Philoptochos Scholarship – $1,000
- John N. Pappas Scholarship – $1,000
- S. Lee Vavuris Legal Scholarship – $1,000
- Dr. Anthony P. Bagatelos Medical Scholarship – up to 75% of annual fund interest

Eligibility Requirements
To be considered, applicants must meet the following general requirements:
- Applicant (or parent/guardian if under 18) must be a member in good standing of the Annunciation Cathedral
- Active participation through Stewardship
- A 2026 Stewardship Pledge must be on record with the Cathedral
Bagatelos & Vavuris Scholarships Only: Applicants must be of Greek descent or Greek Orthodox faith, enrolled in an accredited medical or law school (for Bagatelos scholarship, preferably Standford or USF), and intend to practice within the San Francisco Bay Area (preferably San Francisco).
- Up to 75% of the Bagatelos Scholarship Fund’s annual fund income is awarded to the same student through graduation, contingent on annual academic verification by June 1 of each year.
- The Vavuris Scholarship is awarded in cooperation with the Hellenic Law Society
Vellis Scholarship Only: Applicant must have participated in a youth activity such as Sunday school/ELIPDA, altar, Greek School, dance group, and/or other Cathedral-sponsored volunteer activities. A member of the Vellis family will participate in the selection process.
Philoptochos Scholarship Only: Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to public service through meaningful participation with a community, person, or cause. A member of the Philoptochos will participate in the selection process.
Required Application Materials

- Official high school or college transcript
- Recent SAT or ACT scores
- Letter of recommendation from ONE (1) Parish member (not related to applicant) in good standing with the Annunciation (and/or, in the case of the Philoptochos scholarship, of the Cathedral Ladies of Philoptochos)
- Resume (maximum ONE page) including honors, extracurricular activities, education, and life goals
Award Details
- Applicants will be notified of scholarship decisions by email following the review process.
- Scholarship awards will be presented at the Graduation Day Luncheon following Divine Liturgy on Sunday, May 31. Attendance by recipients is expected.

While these scholarships are administered separately and require a distinct application process, they are shared here as an informational resource for families who wish to pursue further funding opportunities.
