Cathedral Awards the Christos Tsikitas Scholarship to Stephen Panagiotopoulos
In addition to the scholarships awarded by the Ladies Philoptochos reported in the August Herald, and the awarding of the Andreas and Nikki Coundouris Scholarship reported in the September Herald, the Cathedral is happy to announce the awarding of the Christos Tsikitas Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to Stephen Panagiotopoulos!
Stephen has just begun his first college school year and is attending San Francisco State University. He is taking Biology courses with the objective of pursuing dentistry. Below are a few words from Stephen excerpted from his scholarship application:
“As much as I enjoy working on my cars, I always manage to find time to show my praise to God. Since I was young I attended Sunday School to learn more about my Greek Orthodox religion and faith; and become in touch with God. While I was in Sunday School, I was also a member of the Altar Boys who help the priest and assist him during Liturgy on Sundays. I continued to dedicate my time by volunteering at the monthly soup kitchen to feed those in need. As I spoke to those who came in those nights, they thanked me with kind words and told me stories of how difficult their lives truly are, which helped build my understanding of the real world and how doing something small could be an extremely generous act for another.”
Bravo, Stephen! The Cathedral sends its support and best wishes to you as you begin this new chapter in your life!
Cathedral Awards Andreas and Nikki Coundouris Scholarship to Maria Morearty
The Cathedral is please to announce the awarding of the Andreas and Nikki Coundouris Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to Maria Morearty! Maria is a very involved young member of our Cathedral. She is active in Greek dance, GOYA, Sunday School, and is a willing volunteer for our Community Kitchen and other events at the church.
Maria will be attending the University of San Diego and studying in the field of Business Administration. Below are a few words from Maria from her scholarship application:
“Over the past four years that I have attended the Annunciation, I have been completely welcomed into the community, and in return I aim to serve the community. My most prominent community service interests throughout high school are helping the less fortunate in San Francisco and raising awareness about environmental concerns. I have volunteered at the Annunciation’s soup kitchens and Holy Trinity’s food pantry to give food to the less fortunate. At my high school, I joined the environmental club and helped to organize film festivals to raise awareness about environmental concerns.”
Bravo Maria! The Cathedral sends its support and best wishes to you as you begin this new chapter in your life!

It is with great enthusiasm that the Ladies of the Philoptochos announce the recipients of the 2020 Scholarship Awards. The Scholarships have been awarded to Andrew Vellis and Stelios Kyriacou. The committee feels that these two young men have given over and above community service and met all of the requirements that the committee has put forth. Andrew Vellis aspires to a career with the Coast Guard. He will be attending the College of San Mateo. His major will be History. Stelios Kyriacou’s interest lies in the medical field. He also will be attending a community college with plans to transfer.
We want to commend the parents of each recipient. We give our heartiest congratulations to Chris and Irene Kyriacou and Costas and Meena Vellis for their hard work and determination in guiding their children to success and sustaining their faith with the Greek Orthodox Church.
We wish them Good Luck and much success.
